ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND DINNER
Monday, November 6, 2016

Calgary CCCFA held its AGM and a regular dinner on Monday Nov 6 at the TaiPan restaurant. Owner Vivienne provided another interesting new selection of dishes including turnip puffs, Peking duck, chicken chow mien, crab soup, spicy seafood, Chinese greens, steamed clams in ginger and black beans, with red bean mandarin soup for dessert.

The AGM was concluded promptly with a change in executive members. We thank Donna Lamb and Tony Lamb for their many years of work and support, and welcome Gail Closson to the planning group. Treasurer confirms we are still on the black side of the ledger! We will meet soon to plan events for 2017. The next meeting with be Chinese New Year dinner on Monday February 6th, 2017 at TaiPan restaurant.

We welcomed 3 new guests from the MeetUp invitation and hope they will become a regular part of our membership. After the meeting, Tony Lamb presented a video “Nature and Man” of the beautiful rice growing terrace area of Yunnan. The culture, beliefs, customs and terrain of this area were described by the people of the Hani minority. Sheila encouraged everyone to try to visit Yunnan, which is in her view, the most interesting area of China to visit to see minority peoples and gorgeous countryside. In line with the evening’s theme, Kelly again provided door prizes of tasty rice snacks and food, along with some interesting DVD videos.

MOVIE NIGHT AND DINNER
Monday, August 22, 2016

Thanks to everyone who came to our Movie Night and Dinner! We enjoyed a short video on the special foods of Suzhou, including the famous blue crab cakes. In anticipation of the Moon Festival, we also heard the charming legend behind the moon cake celebration from Consul Zhang and Angela.

We also welcomed for the first time newcomer Vice Consul Feng, whom we also hope to see at future dinners. After a beautifully-prepared meal of some new special dishes, everyone took home a sample of the beautifully created white lotus or red bean cakes.

CCCFA NEW YEAR DINNER

We celebrated Chinese New Year on February 22nd at the Tai Pan Restaurant at 1518 Centre Street NE. Kelly Wan gave a brief presentation about Chinese New Year's customs and foods. As well, Consul Gao Qingjun joined us for our celebrations. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

CCCFA PRE-HOLIDAY DINNER
Monday, December 7, 2015

We enjoyed another good dinner meeting at Tai Pan restaurant with some new faces and a few new dishes to wind up our year. Consul Wang XioaLin made a brief and very interesting presentation to our group on China's economic situation and outlook. Highlights were that, although China's growth rate has slowed, China aims for more reasonable levels for the future. They are also working to establish better social standards for areas where living standards are still below par.

We also welcomed Consul Wang's young son Tom, who helped with name tags and prize draws. Thanks to the Consulate, bank (Angela)and restaurant (Vivian) for calendar donations for the year of the Monkey. Watch for news of the Last day of Chinese New Year dinner coming up on Feb 22, 2016.

About 40 members came together for a celebratory lunch Sunday October 6 at the Emerald Garden Restaurant, which had opened specially for us that day. We feasted on Peking Duck followed by chicken, beef, port and seafood dishes. This Macao-type restaurant has been a favourite for many years and did not disappoint with a sumptuous array of flavours.

After lunch, or as much as we could eat, we cut the beautiful 40th anniversary cake, produced by Morag made by one of her fellow TaiChi students - almost too beautiful to cut, but we managed to do so. Past president and long-time past member, Sheila Power cut the cake. Sheila was instrumental in first bringing up the idea of a program for families with children adopted from China.

We were also pleased to be joined by Xihong Cao, past president of the Calgary Chinese Students and Scholars Association from the University of Calgary, whose enthusiasm helped us set up our joint ShouLaShou program for kids adopted from China. We were pleased to welcome families from ShouLaShou who have adopted children and also Xihong’s two new little Canadians. The lone young man was not shy in joining all the ladies!

After lunch director Joanna Chang showed us all how to invent the character for China or Middle Kingdom with a drawn character, a straw and our fingers to create a ‘kingdom.’ Sandra and Morag had arranged craft projects where we all made red celebratory candles (red to signify our ruby anniversary.) For whose who did not want to get hands into it, candles were made by the kids for them. Also there were supplies for mask painting which resulted in some very creative masks.

It was a good time to celebrate both China’s national day and our own special anniversary.

Thank you to all the directors who worked hard to make this a reality, and all our members and some guests who joined us for our special day. We look forward to our next dinner, which will incorporate a short AGM, on the evening of Monday December 1st.




CCCFA DINNER
Monday, August 25, 2014



Nearly 30 members enjoyed an excellent dinner at the beautiful Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre on Monday Aug 25th. We welcomed prospective members who had read about us in our ad in the Calgary Herald (Swerve magazine and website), and hope this will attract new members to our group. We also welcomed young members from the ShouLaShou group while school break is on. It is usually too late for the youngsters during term time.
